Types of Living Walls

Living walls, also known as moss walls, vertical planters, and vertical gardens, add serious luxury to your space. They liven the place up (literally) and are considered to be satisfying home decor. There are a few ways to go about creating a plant wall, so you’ll need to decide which type works best for your space. You have pretty much full freedom when it comes to deciding which type of wall you want. This could be a moss-only wall, a hanging planter full of dried flowers and eucalyptus, or even hanging propagation sets.

We are going to specifically talk about indoor plants in wall planters (this does not include moss, vegetables, flowers, etc.).

Let’s dive into how to make a living wall indoor!

Step 1: Decide and Buy/Build

Decide your foundation first - don’t choose the plants yet! This is important because you can always adjust the plant, not the hanging pot/planter. Below are a few options based on your space requirements. Also be aware of how you are going to put the wall planters on the wall - do you have sturdy walls for a thick trough (like the one in the image above)? Or do you want a delicate look with simple hooks?

Small Spaces:

2 or 3 piece hanging planters work best for apartments, small rooms, or little space on the wall. You don’t want to overwhelm the wall. If you have pets, make sure to place the planters high enough, especially since you’ll likely have a hanging plant that will continue growing downward.

Pro tip: hang pots at an angle to each other. Think of diamond shapes and triangles.

Medium Spaces:

For an empty guest room wall or a fresh start in a house, you can get bigger with the foundation of your living wall indoor. Option 1 below showcases an artistic touch to the “hanging” part of the planters while keeping a clean look. Option 2 is simpler but it can hold larger houseplants.

Large Spaces:

The possibilities grow with larger spaces, but so does the work. Larger spaces include a covered patio/balcony and spacious walls in a house or living area. In the option below, you have to drill into the wall because the more plants you’re trying to hold, the sturdier you’ll need your backdrop. Grab a few of these pretty wall planters and start building!

Pro tip: make sure there is drainage in the planters! Some have them built in, others don’t. You can use a plastic or cork liner underneath the plant inside the planter.

Step 2: Gather Plants

Phew! Finally the wall hanging planter is up so it’s time for the fun part. This is also a good time to call us for guidance about the plants that will thrive the best in your planters. Lighting is the biggest player, here, and we do these types of installations often.

Choose an assortment of houseplants so the wall has varying textures, colors, and care - for example, a spider plant, golden pothos, and pothos n’ joy. These three plants have similar color hues of green but different leaf patterns and the care is relatively the same to make it easy. When you add color, base it around 1-3 main colors such as purple, green, and white.

Step 3: Consistent Care

Now that your living plant wall is complete and beautiful, these houseplants need proper care. We also do this part daily - called general maintenance - so let us know if you need assistance! If you added plants with similar care, mark a spot on your calendar weekly to check on them. This includes using a moisture meter to avoid over/under watering, dusting the leaves with microfiber cloths, and using a spray bottle for occasional misting.

There you have it! Your completed vertical planter indoor with all its glory to share with friends and family. You’ll feel the positive effects of your living wall for your mental and physical health, and the space itself will light up the room. Happy planting!
