Common Plant Problems

“What does this mean?!” Thank goodness we have technology to search for instant solutions and thank goodness to the people who have found and shared those solutions. The list below explains the most common houseplant problems such as yellow leaves and brown spots. We are going to keep your leafy friends thriving!

Yellow Leaves

Possible Causes: Overwatering, underwatering, or nutrient deficiencies.

Solution: Adjust your watering routine to keep it consistent and review each plant’s required watering, ensuring the soil dries out between waterings. Feed your plants with a balanced fertilizer to address nutrient deficiencies.

Wilting

Possible Causes: Overwatering, underwatering, or root rot.

Solution: Assess the moisture level in the soil and adjust your watering frequency to each plant’s needs. If root rot is suspected, take the plant out of the pot, trim the affected roots with clean scissors, and repot the plant in well-draining soil.

Brown Tips on Leaves

Possible Causes: Low humidity, over-fertilizing, or inconsistent watering.

Solution: Increase the humidity around the plant by misting it with a spray bottle, placing a humidity tray underneath, or investing in a humidifier. Adjust your fertilizing schedule (most plants don’t need much fertilizer!) and maintain a consistent watering routine.

Pests

Common Culprits: Spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, fungus gnats.

Solution: Inspect your plants for pests every time you water. You’ll want to treat infestations with natural remedies such as my favorite Crop Control solution or Insecticidal Soap. If the houseplant is infected, isolate it to prevent the spread of pests.

Fungal Issues

Common Problems: Mold, mildew, or root rot.

Solution: Improve air circulation around your plants by spacing them appropriately. Ensure there is proper drainage and avoid overwatering. If mold or mildew is present, wipe the affected areas with a damp cloth and adjust your watering practices. When in doubt, use Crop Control on your plants every week so that pests, mildew, and mold are prevented.

Leggy Growth

Possible Causes: Insufficient light or overcrowding.

Solution: Move your plant to a brighter location (near a window), and prune the leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. If overcrowding is an issue, consider repotting or thinning out the foliage by trimming old leaves.

Curling Leaves

Possible Causes: Underwatering, overwatering, pests.

Solution: Make sure your plants are on a consistent watering schedule. I’ve found the most common cause of curling leaves is underwatering. It’s also important to have drainage and check the bottom of the plant for this plant problem.

Sudden Leaf Drop

Possible Causes: Rapid changes in environmental conditions, overwatering, or shock.

Solution: Gradually acclimate your plant to changes in light or temperature. Adjust your watering routine and ensure your plant is in an environment suitable for its species.

“Oh, that’s what that means.” Troubleshooting common plant problems is part of the learning curve and ultimate plant journey. Luckily, we can identify these problems early on. Happy troubleshooting! Feel free to reach out with more detailed plant questions.
